What We Do
The Health Occupations Academy at Crestview High School opens the door to the world of health care. Whether you are interested in a career as a doctor, nurse, medical technician or any of hundreds of career opportunities, the courses offered by the Health Occupations Academy will offer you a true taste of what it means to work in this field.
Students learn the language of the medical field, and learn how the human body functions and how disease affects the body. Students also learn practical skills such as administering First Aid, CPR, how to use AED (Automatic External Defibrillation) equipment, how to assess vital signs and the fundamentals of patient care, including how to care for bed-bound patients. In this program, students will do research, give oral presentations and work on many projects, like building models of the heart and lungs.
Classes will include an IT component, an anatomy & physiology component (two courses) and an internship component, which will give students real-world experience in the medical field, once they have learned the basics. Students may also take Medical Skills I, an introductory course usually taken in the first year of high school, as well as any number of related science courses offered at the school.
As an intern, students shadow health professionals at Twin Cities Hospital and North Okaloosa Medical Center, and have the opportunity to experience what it's like to work in the emergency room, labor and delivery, diagnostic imaging and the laboratory. Some of our students even arrange their own internships with local doctors and health professionals, including dentists and surgeons.
The health care field offers well-paying jobs here in Northwest Florida and throughout the state. As our population ages, this field can expect continued growth.
